The intermediate shaft bearing, universally known among Porsche owners as the IMS bearing, is the most discussed and most important platform-specific failure concern across the 986 Boxster, 987 Boxster, 996 911, and 997 911 model families produced from 1997 through 2008. The IMS bearing supports the intermediate shaft in Porsche’s M96 and M97 flat-six engines and relies on grease lubrication rather than pressurized oil. Over time the bearing degrades, develops play, and in failure causes catastrophic engine damage with little warning.

The consequences of an IMS bearing failure are severe. Engine replacement or full rebuild is typically required, at a cost that substantially exceeds the value of many of the vehicles affected. The service is well established in the Porsche community and involves replacing the bearing with an upgraded unit, most commonly the LN Engineering retrofit bearing, which addresses the design weakness of the original.

Bore Scoring on Porsche Flat Engines

Bore scoring is a wear pattern specific to Porsche’s flat engines that results from cylinder wall damage caused by oil starvation, often linked to extended oil change intervals, low oil level, or the use of incorrect oil specification. The symptom is a characteristic ticking or tapping noise that develops gradually and worsens under load. Diagnosis requires a scope inspection of the cylinder bores.

Bore scoring on a Porsche flat-six or flat-four is a serious finding that typically requires engine rebuild or replacement depending on severity. The most important thing an owner can do is maintain oil level and change intervals correctly, and bring any unusual engine noise to a knowledgeable shop before the condition progresses.

Cayenne Cooling System and Water Pump Failures

The Porsche Cayenne has a documented cooling system failure pattern, particularly across the V6 and V8 petrol variants of the 955 and 957 generation. Water pump failure, coolant leak from the plastic cooling system components, and thermostat failure all occur at a rate that warrants proactive monitoring and replacement. Shops unfamiliar with the PDK system often skip the adaptation reset, which produces inconsistent shifting behavior that leads owners to conclude the service made things worse.

Oil Leaks on Flat-Six Engines

Oil leaks are a common ownership concern across the Porsche flat-six family, with the rear main seal and camshaft cover gaskets among the most frequent sources. On mid-engine platforms the rear main seal is accessible from the engine bay. On the 911 with its rear-mounted engine the access requirements are more involved.
